2012 PCT Yearly Review – Highlights

International patent filings set a new record in 2011
International patent filings under the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) -administered Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) set a new record in 2011 with 181,900 PCT applications.  The 2011 filings are a 10.7% increase on the number of applications filed in 2010, which is the fastest growth since 2005. China, Japan and the United States of America (US) accounted for 82% of the total growth.

The two millionth PCT application was filed in 2011 (the one millionth was received in 2004). From the entry into force of the PCT in 1978, it therefore took 26 years to reach the milestone of one million applications, but only took less than 7 further years for the total number of PCT applications to reach the figure of two million filed applications.
