Brexit reminder - Who can keep the .eu domain names after Brexit?
As the final day of Brexit is coming closer, there is another IP related aspect that brand owners should consider: the registration of the .eu domain names.
The top-level domain name for the European Union was launched in 2005 and it is only available for EU citizens and organizations.
However, as of 1st of January 2021, UK citizens (and organizations) who do not reside within the EU will be removed as registrants and later on (after a year) the domain will be revoked and released for registration. On the other hand, EU citizens residing in the UK can keep their .eu registrations if they prove that they have a citizenship from one of the EU Member States.
Those who cannot prove eligibility have the option to choose a local contact service which allows them to keep the .eu domain names.
